The Longest Non-Stop Flight in the World: From New York to Singapore
On Thursday, October 11, 2018, 150 passengers embarked on the world’s longest non-stop flight aboard a Singapore Airlines Airbus A350. This historic journey covered a distance of approximately 16,700 kilometers (about 10,400 miles) without any stops, marking a significant milestone in aviation history.
Interestingly, Singapore Airlines had previously operated this route for five years until 2013 but had to suspend it due to rising oil prices and economic challenges. However, in 2018, the airline resumed this ultra-long-haul flight, providing passengers with a direct route between Singapore and New York.
As mentioned, the flight from Singapore to New York is the world’s longest non-stop flight, covering a distance of 16,700 kilometers. The flight on October 11 lasted approximately 19 hours, making it the longest continuous flight by duration as well. The resumption of this flight was delayed for several years due to economic considerations and fluctuating oil prices.
In addition to this route, there have been other long non-stop flights, such as a 17-hour non-stop journey from Perth, Australia, to London, which commenced earlier in 2018 through a collaboration of Australian airlines. Qatar Airways also operates a non-stop flight lasting 17.5 hours between Doha, Qatar, and Auckland, New Zealand. However, the 19-hour flight from Singapore to New York remains the longest by duration.
The high demand for this flight is evident from the fact that all seats were sold out quickly, highlighting its popularity among passengers. The flight departs from Changi Airport in Singapore and lands at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. The direct nature of this flight saves passengers significant time compared to other routes.
Singapore Airlines reported that all “business class” seats for this flight were sold out, with only a few “premium economy” seats remaining. The airline also stated that there are no plans to include standard economy seats on this route. The business class section offers passengers two meals (tailored to their preferences) and a variety of beverages, along with sleeping facilities. In the “premium economy” section, passengers are served three meals at set times, along with a selection of drinks.
The A350-900 aircraft used for this non-stop flight has a capacity of about 161 passengers, with 67 seats in business class and 94 seats in premium economy class.
The New A350-900 Ultra Long-Range Aircraft
Singapore Airlines achieved this record-breaking flight thanks to modifications made to the Airbus A350-900, allowing it to operate non-stop for up to 20 hours. The A350-900 boasts 20-30% less fuel consumption compared to the Boeing 777, a significant advantage given rising fuel costs. Several airlines now use the A350-900 ultra-long-range aircraft for their long-haul routes. These planes feature a higher cabin ceiling, larger windows, and specialized lighting designed to reduce the effects of jet lag, making them ideal for business travelers.
These innovations in the A350-900 have solidified its place as the aircraft capable of setting the record for the longest non-stop flight in the world.
